I remember going to the circus as a child and wondering when, exactly, do you discover that you can turn a triple back flip on the high wire? So you know you can turn the flip. On your bed. In your front yard. On your driveway. But on the high wire? You can practice and plan all you want, but when do you just -- you know -- do it?
I've spent the past four days (Really? Has it only been four days?) preparing to teach, and planning for my first days of teaching summer school. Making the schedule today with my second-year, I was torn between wanting to spend lots of time watching him teach, and wanting to just go ahead, stand up, and start doing it myself. I'm eager to be through with planning to be a teacher and to begin actually being a teacher. But I'm also scared to turn that flip and trust I'll land with my feet on the wire, catch my balance, and do it all over again.
I tend to think of our next three weeks of summer school as training wheels time. I might be fully capable of riding that two-wheeler, but knowing the training wheels are there will give me the confidence I need to do it. So, second years, if you're reading this, please remember your first summer school days and how confusing it all was, and how grateful you were for the organization, support, and reassurance you received -- or wished you had received. Be our training wheels just a little while longer. Just before they come off is when we need them most, in a way.
